After almost 3 weeks of problems and false starts in Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky the Bering strait swim 2011 was finally and definitively cancelled, or at least postponed until 2012. Kamchatka is also known as the land of fire and ice and on this occasion it seems the fire prevailed as the swimmers were limited to training swims in Avachinsky bay and the pacific ocean, lowest temperature 11c. However there were visits to a small lake with 10 minute swims in 5c water. Some participants also summitted the Avacha Volcano in abysmal conditions, but ultimately the enormous target that was the Bering Strait was not even sighted.
Beaurocratic problems concerning the ship(s) prevented the expedition from leaving the harbour in Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky. The tragic sinking of a passenger vessel on the Volga river earlier in July was the catalyst for these problems and after tireless work from the organisers it seemed that a ship carrying the swimmers to Chukotka and the Bering Strait would sail but alas it wasnt to be and all hopes for this event turn to 2012.
